ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
While vaccine administration training is included in the curriculum for several health professions such as nursing and pharmacy, it is not universally incorporated into medical school pre-clinical curriculum. Inspired by the mobilization efforts of medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic, we developed a hybrid (in-person and online) vaccine administration training program that can be standardized for application to schools across the country. In collaboration with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing, we developed a pilot vaccine training program for first- and second-year medical students using an online Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) module and an in-person simulation with nursing faculty.
In the face of increasing vaccine hesitancy, disparities in access to vaccination, and limited community knowledge about vaccines, we believe that medical students can play a pivotal role in addressing these challenges. Our standardized training program is designed to prepare medical students to use their skills at local free clinics and annual vaccine drives. By utilizing this standardized curriculum, we empower medical students to contribute actively to nationwide efforts in improving vaccination rates and promoting public health.
